History

Government

Criminal Punishment

If convicted of a crime, the 6th finger on the subject's dominant hand gets amputated. Anyone with ten fingers is generally assumed to be lesser and is treated as such. They may be excluded from government programs and face stiff discrimination within Tieteran society.

Number System and Finger Removal

Tietero uses a in base-11, people are born with 6 fingers on each hand, but one is amputated from non-dominant hand when they turn 14 years old to signify adulthood. The elite can pay for this to be done by a doctor surgically, while the poor generally must settle for bolt cutters. “Got the bolts” is a typical insult used for the poor and those disgraced from their families.

Religion

Portism

The most important religious symbol is a windsock, which was left behind by the gods, Filoto and Kapilano, when they ascended to heaven. Churches have long, wide paths paved with cobblestone adjacent to welcome the gods if they should wish to return. On the 5th day of every month, they light candles and place along the path to help guide the gods back to bless the people.

Discordism

While a fringe religious group, it still has a significant impact on island culture and politics. Discordians believe the world was created by a group of higher level beings, who each control a single country, within a forum called a "Discord" as a world-building project. These beings are generally considered malevolent, they may at times cause panic and destruction for their own whims. The Key Being for Tietero, Jhn, is seen as absent-minded and unserious, often causing events for no other reason than to amuse himself. Followers tend to accept the happenings of the world as beyond their control and seek to find inner peace instead.

Critics of Discordism cite the unrealistic nature of the religion, and how if such higher level beings did exist, they surely would have better things to do instead.
