History

Pre-calming

Many of the human clans were stuck in constant state of war. During this time period monsters were a common sight across the land and death was considered a mercy by some. The various non-human groups were often caught between the monsters and the clan's wars and it is thought that many of them were wiped out. The period came to an end when the reclusive Dvergur sent out a small number of their elder mages to put an end to ceaseless wars of the clans. The subjugation was a bloody and brutal affair but eventually the might of the Dvergur's magic won out and they crowned one of their own as Emperor and founded Clan Kalifen, they have ruled the island unopposed up until shortly after the storm cleared.

Civil war

The many thousand years of peace under their rule came to an end when several of the clans rebelled believing that the Dvergur blood in the royal family was diluted enough that they had a chance at self rule. The war began on 14-3 1 PC when the Emperor Olaf Fredradaughter and their family were assassinated leaving the throne empty and with no clear line of succession. On 1-5 1 PC the Nation of Niueyjar cut all contact with the outside war. The civil war was a brutal affair that eventually came to an end when Vidar Astridson of Clan Erak was slain using missiles that the rebels had supplied with by the Eastern Bloc. Following his death the young Dvergur, named Heidr Gullveigdaughter, whom he had planned to place on the throne finished off the remaining rebels with a small faction of her people who had chosen to come with her to the surface. She was shortly after crowned Empress Heidr Gullveigdaughter of Clan Kalifen. Her reign was short lived however as seeing the precarious position her rule was in she reorganized the Nation of Niueyjar into the Confederated Nation of Niueyjar with the help of the non-humans on the island. She stepped down from her seat as empress and took up the mantle of Council Chairman as the Ruling Council's sole unelected member.

Post-civil war

On 15-8 6 PC the Nation of Niueyjar invited foreign companies into Niueyjar to help in the rebuilding process.

Establishment of the CNN

In 7 PC the Nation of Niueyjar began the process of integrating the various sentient species of their island into their government.

On 10-3 7 PC, the Nation of Niueyjar entered into talks with the Ninph tribes, with Heidr Gullveigdaughter meeting with the Council of the Ninph on 13-3.

On 19-8 7 PC, the Nation of Niueyjar began negotiations with the Krond to pay reparation for the thousands of years of attempted genocide in an attempt to normalize relations.

The proscess of integration ended on 8-11 7 PC with the establishment of the Confederated Nation of Niueyjar.

Economy

Low on fossil fuels, led to early experiments with nuclear energy that failed. Eventually settled on geothermal, hydroelectric, and wind power. They tend to take a quality over quantity approach due to the occasional branch of the storm moving over them and destroying lesser constructions. No cars, so lots of trains. Generally flag terrain is used to primarily farm rice and beans. Coastal fishing is a fairly large industry and provides most of the meat contents of the people’s diet. Most coastal towns have offshore wind farms set up which provide consistent and reliable power to the cities.

Niueyjar's primary sources of energy are geothermal, hydroelectric and wind power. The island's lack of natural resources means that fossil fuels cannot be used. There were experiments with nuclear energy in 18 TT, although these failed catastrophically and resulted in a blah blah blah nuclear zone. The accident began with failures in the non-nuclear secondary system followed by a stuck-open pilot-operated relief valve (PORV) in the primary system that allowed large amounts of nuclear reactor coolant to escape. The mechanical failures were compounded by the initial failure of plant operators to recognize the situation as a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). TMI training and procedures left operators and management ill-prepared for the deteriorating situation. During the event these inadequacies were compounded by design flaws, including inconveniently arranged instruments and controls, the use of multiple similar alarms, and a failure of the equipment to clearly indicate coolant inventory level or the position of the stuck-open PORV.

Following the calming of the seas and the end of the Niueyjara Civil War the former Empress, Heidr Gullveigdaughter of Clan Kalifen, laid out a plan to leverage Niueyjar's large population and highly urbanized and industrialized nature to turn it into the manufacturing hub for all of Attu. She also began work to attempt to turn the Niueyjara Krone into Attu's primary currency for international trade.

Culture

Niueyjar is a truly magical island, with witches, wizards, monsters of legend, and a wide array of unique intelligent peoples who inhabit the island and it's surrounding waters. The prevalence of magic has caused scientific understanding to lag behind in a variety of sectors leading to a strange mix of rational beliefs and those derived from the expansive folklore of the island. Many foreigners struggle to get a hold of Niueyjara culture due to the lack of a clear line between myth and reality.
